COST OF LIVING IN CROATIA
Health Insurance
NON-EU/EEA citizens coming from a country that has a visa regime with the Republic of Croatia need to apply for a visa via the Croatian Embassy in their home country before departing for Croatia.
Upon students’ registration for studying at VERN’ University, students will receive a list of house agents regarding their accommodation in Zagreb.
Depending of the type of accommodation, cost can vary: 300 – 600 EUR per month.
Please note that the cost of accommodation can change during the year.
Students are not obligated to use the University’s housing agents.
All incoming students enrolled in a selected study program are required by the Croatian law and VERN’ University to show proof of insurance coverage for the whole academic year. It is the student’s responsibility to have valid health insurance / health care accepted in Croatia during the whole study period. Additionally, valid health insurance is a requirement for obtaining a visa and regulation of stay in Zagreb, Croatia.
This means that students must have adequate health insurance as a requirement for enrollment at the University and must submit their scanned health insurance information by email.
There are two types of health insurance that you can have during your stay in Croatia:
1) National insurance through HZZO
1) You can get national insurance through HZZO (Croatian Health Insurance Fund). During your registration of stay in Zagreb at the Police station, they will issue you a request letter. You need to take this request letter you need to bring to HZZO where it needs to be approved. Once the request letter is approved you will be issued an official health card. Additionally, HZZO will give you an official letter in which it is stated that you are now insured. Official letter from HZZO needs to be delivered to the Registration office at Police station so it may be added to your register of stay application. For new enrollees in the HZZO, an initial payment of 700 EUR must be paid. There is a monthly cost for this insurance option, which can vary and the cost is approximately 60 EUR per month. This means that the cost of health insurance for the first year is around 1400 EUR and for each consecutive year 720 EUR.
2) Travel insurance
2) You may purchase travel insurance for the duration of your stay in Croatia (it must be valid in the Republic of Croatia for the whole duration of your stay). Please contact the Croatian Embassy or Consular Office about minimal travel insurance coverage. When in need to use medical institutions in Croatia you will cover the costs of all medical treatments yourself and subsequently refund them by your insurance company in accordance with the insurance policy you have purchased. Please consult your insurance company about the details on how to use your travel insurance during your stay in Croatia.
Employment for international students in Croatia is limited. If you are approached with a job or service offer, or if you are interested in pursuing such an opportunity, it is very important that you contact VERN’ International Office upon arrival.
